Research Interests
New drug development, combined modality therapy for regionally advanced lung cancer, medical graphics and informatics, cancer chemoprevention.
Since the early 1980s, I have been involved in a number of aspects of aerodigestive (head and neck & lung) cancer clinical research. This balance over the years has shifted more to lung cancer and other malignancies of the chest.
In my role as Director of the MDACC Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC) I have the opportunity to work with a number of our faculty who are developing the newest agents for cancer. In the CTRC we are developing new ways to use graphics and computer applications (informatics) to make individual research protocols more intuitive and easier to conduct. We strive to help patients become more knowledgeable in research-based care.
Ultimately, a major part of the solution to the lung cancer problem is prevention. Dr. Waun Ki Hong is a world leader in this area and I have had the honor of a close working relationship with Dr. Hong since 1982. Currently, I am the Chair of a large National Cancer Institute (NCI) Sponsored research protocol evaluating selenium chemoprevention in patients who have had surgery for stage I lung cancer.
I am proud to have had a role in the early clinical trials of epirubicin, the taxanes, and the new targeted oral inhibitors of the epidermal and vascular growth factor receptors. Our recent studies of the insulin growth factor receptor (IGFr) an inhibitor figitumumab plus chemotherapy have shown promising early results.
We all look forward to the day when patients whose cancers cannot be prevented or cured can live with lung cancer rather than die from it.
