Bio Statement

Dr. Francisco J. Esteva moved to the United States after receiving his medical degree from the University of Zaragoza Faculty of Medicine in his native Spain. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center (Camden, NJ) and a fellowship in medical oncology at Georgetown University Medical Center (Washington, DC). In 1997 Dr. Esteva was recruited by The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he contributed to the development of an internationally recognized program in clinical and translational research in breast cancer. In 2001 Dr. Esteva received a Ph.D. degree from his alma mater. In 2010 he was inducted as a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. Dr. Esteva is dedicated to the development of novel therapies for breast cancer, with a passion for improving the survival and quality of life of cancer patients through innovative research and compassionate patient care.

Research Interests

Dr. Esteva directed the Breast Cancer Translational Research Laboratory at MD Anderson Cancer Center for 6 years and currently serves as the Director of the Breast Cancer Serum Bank. Research interests include biomarkers, targeted therapies, mechanisms of drug resistance, translational research and investigator-initiated clinical trials. Dr. Esteva has become a leader in the clinical application of biomarkers, such as HER2 in cancer patients. His laboratory was the first to report synergism between the HER2-directed monoclonal antibodies trastuzumab and pertuzumab in breast cancer. This finding was subsequently confirmed in clinical trials, resulting in the 2012 FDA approval of this combination for patients with HER2 positive metastatic breast cancer. More recent work has focused on the role of HER2 mutations in resistance to HER2-targeted therapy. Another area of research is the impact of obesity and obesity treatments in breast cancer. All of his work has significant implications for novel clinical trials in patients with breast cancer, some of which are completed or in progress. Dr. Esteva is considered to be an expert in the field of clinical research of breast cancer, especially in regards to targeted therapies. He lectures and publishes extensively regarding the management of patients with breast cancer. Reflecting his expertise, Dr. Esteva serves as co-chair of the HER2 working group at SWOG, he is a member of the Systemic Therapy for Women with Advanced HER2 Positive Breast Cancer Expert Panel for the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and he is on the editorial boards of several leading cancer journals.

Clinical Interests

Diagnosis, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.
