Bio Statement
Dr. Helen Rhodes joined the faculty in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology in 2004 after spending a decade practicing Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Houston community. Dr. Rhodes sees patients both at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and at Lyndon Baines Johnson Hospital.
Dr. Rhodes’ role in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology is two-fold. First, Dr. Rhodes provides consultative medical and surgical gynecologic care for women being treated here at M.D. Anderson for non-gynecologic malignancies. Specifically, she has an expertise in providing gynecologic care for women with breast cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and colorectal cancer as their gynecologic concerns are unique. Secondly, Dr. Rhodes also serves as Director of Colposcopy and Preinvasive Diseases. She supervises the care of women who need evaluation for Pap smear abnormalities or who have been diagnosed with preinvasive disease of the genital tract.
Dr. Rhodes was instrumental in adding the HPV vaccine to the M. D. Anderson pharmaceutical formulary and has given numerous lectures to other academic institutions as well as local community groups on the importance of cancer screening in women as well as vaccinating against HPV disease. Dr. Rhodes is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network which meets annually to review national guidelines for cervical cancer screening in women. She is a member of the American Medical Association, Texas Medical Association, Harris County Medical Society, American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is a Fellow of The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Rhodes maintains voluntary re-certification with the board on an annual basis.
Dr. Rhodes enjoys teaching and supervising advanced practice nurses as well as residents and fellows in the clinics and operating room. But most of all, she enjoys partnering with her patients in helping them lead healthy and productive lives.
