Primary Appointment

Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Division of OVP, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

Bio Statement

I have been trained as a molecular epidemiologist with a broad background in molecular epidemiology and have expertise in several cytogenetic and molecular assays for genetic susceptibility to cancers, including DNA repair capacity, mutagen sensitivity, methylation, proteomic markers, apoptosis, and genotyping analysis. I was awarded a NIH R03 grant, several developmental research projects from melanoma SPORE, ovarian SPORE, and a career development project from breast cancer SPORE; and have published dozens of manuscripts on genetic susceptibility to Cancers. As a result of these previous experiences, I lay the groundwork for molecular epidemiological research. I am aware of the importance of frequent communication among project members and of constructing a realistic research plan, timeline, and budget.

Research Interests

In collaboration with Dr. Qingyi Wei (this department), I have conducted an NIH-funded study on gamma-ray-induced mutagen sensitivity and risk of breast cancer, and several Developmental Research Projects in MD Anderson Breast, Ovarian, and Melanoma SPOREs. We are investigating the biological biomarkers at chromosomal, cellular, and protein levels that are associated with risk of cancers. we have reported that patients with nonmelanoma skin cancer were sensitive to ultraviolet B light, having significantly higher frequency of chromatid breaks, and that patients with head and neck cancer were sensitive to benzo[a]pyrene diol epoxide, as evidenced by increased frequency of chromatid breaks. We have also reported that reduced cellular DNA repair capacity was associated with risk of cancers of skin, head and neck, and lung. We have recently reported that DNA repair capacity in peripheral lymphocytes predicts survival of patients with non-small-cell lung cancer treated with first-line platinum-based chemotherapy. I am also interested in the genetic polymorphisms of genes involved in DNA repair and apoptosis and their roles in cancer risk.
