Marta Penas-Prado, M.D.

Present Title & Affiliation

Primary Appointment

Assistant Professor, Department of Neuro-Oncology, Division of Cancer Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

Bio Statement

I received my medical degree from the Universidad de Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 1998. My Postgraduate training is as follows: residency training in Neurology at the Hospital Universitario Doce de Octubre in Madrid, Spain (1999-2003). Fellowship in Neuro-Oncology at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas (2005-2007). Master’s degree in Molecular Oncology from the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncologicas (CNIO) (Spanish National Cancer Research Center) in Madrid, Spain (2008-2010). My research during my Neuro-oncology fellowship focused on the analysis of treatment modalities and outcome of adult patients with medulloblastoma. My research project for the master’s degree evaluated the prognostic value of Wnt/beta-catenin pathway in adult PNETs and medulloblastomas. After my fellowship, I worked as a neurologist/neuro-oncologist in Hospital Universitario Doce de Octubre and Hospital Ruber Internacional (2008-2011) in Madrid, Spain. I joined the Department of Neuro-Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center as Assistant Professor in November 2011.

My main research interests are the development of clinical trials with targeted agents for malignant gliomas and adult medulloblastoma. My research overview is as follows: active enrollment of patients in clinical trials for newly diagnosed and recurrent malignant gliomas and implementation of a clinical research program in adult medulloblastomas. I am principal investigator of the following active clinical trials (selected): Protocol 2011-0374. A Phase I lead-in to a 2x2x2 Factorial Trial of Dose Dense Temozolomide, Memantine, Mefloquine, and Metformin As Post-Radiation Adjuvant Therapy of Glioblastoma Multiforme. Protocol BTTC09-01. Phase I-II Everolimus and Sorafenib in Recurrent High-Grade Gliomas. Protocol 2012-0392. A Phase Ib, Multi-Center, Open Label, Dose Escalation Study of Oral LDE225 in Combination with BKM120 in Patients with Advanced Solid Tumors. Protocol CLDE225C2301. A Phase III, multi-center, open-label, randomized, controlled study of the efficacy and safety of oral LDE225 versus temozolomide in patients with Hh-pathway activated relapsed medulloblastoma.
