Bio Statement

Matthew M. Hanasono, M.D. is an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.  He is Director of the Physician Assistant Program and Co-Director of Microsurgical Education within the Department of Plastic Surgery. He trained at Cornell and Columbia Universities as well as Stanford University and is board certified in both Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.  He also completed a fellowship in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Hanasono has lectured nationally and internationally on a broad range of topics related to plastic and reconstructive surgery and has authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and 15 book chapters.

Research Interests

Dr. Hanasono performs reconstructive surgery for patients with cancer involving all areas of the body.  His clincial interests include reconstructive surgery for patients with head and neck cancer, breast cancer, and cancer of the upper and lower extremities.  Within head and neck cancer, Dr. Hanasono specializes in complex reconstruction of the face, oral cavity, upper and lower jaws, and skull base, including the facial nerve.  Dr. Hanasono has performed hundreds of microvascular free flap surgeries for cancer patients.  He also performs reconstructions after removal of skin cancers, such as after Moh's surgery or surgery for melanoma.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Hanasono's research interests include outcomes and translational research involving microvascular surgery, reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, and reconstructive surgery of the breast.  Current projects include computer modeling for maxillary and mandibular reconstruction, skull base and facial nerve reconstruction, and "aesthetic" reconstruction with adipofascial free flaps and autologous fat grafts.
