Bio Statement

As a matter of record, I have a long-standing collaboration and have jointly led a research laboratory with Dr. Pasqualini since October 1999 (please note that we are husband-and-wife).  Since our arrival at MDACC, we have published over 130 original peer-reviewed research manuscripts and.  Our research group currently includes several graduate or M.D./Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty (assistant and associate professors), research technicians, and administrative staff members.  Our central working hypothesis is that differential protein expression in the human vascular endothelium associated with normal or diseased tissues offers the potential for developing novel diagnostic, imaging, and therapeutic strategies. In essence, our research program uses combinatorial library selection (peptide- and antibody-based) to discover, validate, and exploit the biochemical diversity of endothelial (vascular) cell surfaces towards a new targeted pharmacology.  Such technologies may lead to the development of ligand-directed therapeutic and imaging agents. Of note, in 2009, the FDA approved a First-in-Human study for our first Investigational New Drug (IND). Several patients have already been enrolled in this MDACC-sponsored clinical trial.  A second IND was filed mid-November 2010, two other targeted-therapeutics are in pre-IND stage. Several others are evolving in pre-clinical laboratory phase. Long-term, the broader vision of our research is to construct a large-scale map of receptors in the human vasculature (termed human vascular zip codes) towards a new ligand-directed pharmacology.
