Aradhana M Venkatesan, M.D., FSAR, FSIR, FACR

Department of Abdominal Imaging, Division of Diagnostic Imaging

      About Dr. Aradhana M Venkatesan

Dr. Venkatesan joined The University of Texas MD Anderson (UTMDACC) in 2014 as a Tenure Track Associate Professor of Radiology and Director of Translational Research for the Dept. of Abdominal Imaging. In 2020, she was promoted to Full Professor with early award of Term Tenure and she received the UTMDACC President’s Recognition of Faculty Excellence Award in the Category of Research Excellence. Dr. Venkatesan earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She also holds dual undergraduate degrees in Biology and English Literature from Swarthmore College. Her training includes two fellowships, one in Abdominal Imaging and Interventional Radiology and one in Musculoskeletal Imaging and Intervention, both from Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Venkatesan also completed her residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she served as Chief Resident.

Before joining MD Anderson, Dr. Venkatesan was a Staff Clinician and Investigator in the Radiology and Imaging Sciences Department and Center for Interventional Oncology at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, MD (2007-2014). There, she provided expertise in diagnostic body imaging and nonvascular image-guided interventions. She served as a principal investigator on clinical trials pertaining to the use of MRI guided high intensity focused ultrasound, for which she received the NIH Clinical Center Director’s Award in 2010. She also served as an associate investigator on multiple NIH intramural clinical trials, and led educational initiatives for the intramural NIH community, including the quarterly NIH Clinical Center Clinicopathologic Grand Rounds.

As a faculty member at MD Anderson, Dr. Venkatesan provides radiology care to MD Anderson patients across all the abdominal imaging modalities offered by the Abdominal Imaging Department. This includes radiography, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, inpatient and outpatient ultrasound and ultrasound-guided biopsy services. Care is provided to patients in the outpatient, inpatient and Acute Cancer Care Center (ACCC) setting.

In addition to clinical service, Dr. Venkatesan has served as the Abdominal Imaging Department’s modality Director for MRI, managing the abdominal MRI needs for patients, referring clinicians, faculty, trainees and staff across a >30 magnet fleet. As modality Director for MRI, she supervised image quality and provided support for faculty, trainees and technologist education and development. She collaborated with MR technologists and physicists, as well as departmental, Division level and institutional stakeholders to ensure high quality imaging, protocol efficiency, radiologist and referring clinician satisfaction, and optimal patient experiences. She worked with industry partners to ensure the latest technology was integrated into departmental practice in a timely and effective manner.

Dr. Venkatesan’s current research endeavors focus on the development of novel imaging biomarkers to enable risk stratification, adaptive therapy planning and surrogate endpoint use in the treatment of genitourinary (GU) and gynecologic (GYN) malignancies. One of her research focus areas is the development and optimization of imaging techniques to facilitate adaptive image guided radiotherapy. She also maintains active collaborative interests on the use of novel navigation techniques to guide oncology therapies and in the development of new image guided therapies for cancer. Her research portfolio has comprised basic science, translational and clinical research projects, supported by institutional, foundation, philanthropic and federal funding sources.

Dr. Venkatesan has published over 140 peer reviewed publications, multiple book chapters, scientific abstracts & educational exhibits. In addition to her own accomplishments, she has mentored and sponsored numerous trainees and junior faculty throughout her career. Her track record including the successful mentorship and sponsorship of many radiology clinicians, clinician-educators & clinician-scientists as well as imaging physicists & radiation physicists. She has also served as the PhD thesis advisor for multiple successful PhD candidates within the MDACC Division of Diagnostic Imaging.

Dr. Venkatesan is Board Certified by the American Board of Radiology. She is a Fellow in the Society of Interventional Radiology, a Fellow in the Society of Abdominal Radiology and a Fellow in the American College of Radiology. She is a member of the Texas Radiological Society, the American College of Radiology (ACR), the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Abdominal Radiology, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
