Carrie A. Cameron, Ph.D.
Department of Behavioral Science, Division of Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences
About Dr. Cameron
I am Associate Professor in the Dept. of Behavioral Science at MD Anderson Cancer Center. My research focuses on leveraging the social-psychological aspects of language use to help build the biomedical research workforce. The role of scientific communication skills, including informal conversation, in research career development goes beyond the production of written and spoken artifacts and plays a foundational role in the establishment of professional identity, in this case identity as a scientist. Our research has found that the acquisition of written and informal spoken scientific communication skills shapes both trainees’ identity and their intentions to persist in independent research careers, as well as in increasing the quantity of communication in general. This research has been translated into extramurally funded mentor-training programming. The "Scientific Communication Advances Research Excellence 2.0" (GM 125640-08) mentor-training program conducts faculty mentor training virtually and at four sites nationally; curriculum is based on evidence from our prior R01 study (GM 085600, “SCOARE”) of the mechanisms by which SciComm skills predict career intention. This program has made significant contributions to social psychology of language use and to research focused on broadening participation in research careers. The most recent phase of the mentor-training project tested the efficacy of the workshops in enabling participants to influence social-cognitive measures of research career persistence on their mentees, finding that mentor participation effects significant changes on their mentees, including maintenance of science identity, decreased reconsideration of research careers due to perceived linguistic burden, increased frequency of verbal communication, and reduced discomfort due to non-standard home language variety.
In addition, I serve as PI on an NIH Common Fund award that tests effects of learning to communicate across difference on developing science identity and reinforcing STEM career intention (GM 133319, “CAD,” Cameron and Unguez, MPI’s); preliminary evidence suggests significant impact on participant science identity, self-efficacy for communicating across difference, near-peer mentoring self-efficacy, and research self-efficacy.
I lead innovative communication skills programs nationally at organizations such as the Gulf Coast Consortia, the AAMC Group on Graduate Education and Training, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute; my work on scientific elevator speech competitions has been featured nationally on NPR. I am a recipient of the University of Texas Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award and a member of the UT Academy of Health Science Education; in 2017 the AAMC honored my team with the Innovations in Research and Research Education Award. Outside of academia, I have over 2 decades of experience in cross-cultural communication training, working with clients such as the International Space Station, Chevron, and Lockheed-Martin.
