Present Title & Affiliation

Primary Appointment

Assistant Professor, Department of Epidemiology, Division of OVP, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

Bio Statement

The primary goal of my research program is to refine and inform evidence-based dietary recommendations for cancer prevention. As a nutritional epidemiologist trained at the American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute, much of my previous work focused on identifying dietary risk factors in large, prospective cohorts of healthy individuals followed for the development of cancer. At MD Anderson, I am shifting toward more patient-centered projects, targeting diet and the microbiome among high-risk groups (obese, pre-cancer patients, and survivors). We recently completed observational/epidemiologic studies and just began a pilot feeding trial.

In addition to population-based science, I have experience in wet-lab and clinical research. This has significantly enriched my career as an epidemiologist and I strive to address research questions from every angle, considering the biological mechanisms, clinical applications, and public health implications. Broader/collaborative interests include (1) the role of diet, chronic conditions, energy balance and inflammation in cancer risk and survival; (2) dietary assessment methodology; (3) international and minority populations where new and unique modifiable risk factors may be identified; (4) the oral and gut microbiome; and (5) cancers of the kidney and digestive system
