Bio Statement

Dr. Jeffrey E. Lee is Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgical Oncology.  Dr. Lee received his bachelor’s degree magna cum laude from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from the Stanford University School of Medicine. Continuing his post-graduate training at Stanford, Dr. Lee completed an internship and residency in surgery before completing a clinical fellowship in surgical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. In 1993, he joined the faculty of MD Anderson Cancer Center and now holds the rank of Professor and  Chair of Surgical Oncology.  Dr. Lee serves as Co-Director of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Program.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Lee’s clinical interests include melanoma, pancreatic cancer and endocrine tumors, and he is consistently listed among the distinguished physicians in Best Doctors in America. He also is on the faculty of MD Anderson’s Minimally Invasive and New Technology in Oncologic Surgery (MINTOS) program, helping to develop less invasive surgical techniques. His laboratory research focuses on the clinical role and molecular mechanisms of HLA class II genes in the body’s immune response to melanoma and other cancers. His studies have revealed a strong association between the HLA class II allele DRB1*1101 and melanoma. Ultimately, the goal is to use the information from this and other studies to design new approaches to immunotherapy for patients with melanoma, including new strategies for cytokine therapy and novel synthetic melanoma peptide vaccines.
