About Dr. Jun-ichi Abe
Dr. Jun-ichi Abe received his medical degree from Yamagata University in 1987. He subsequently completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Cardiology at Mitsui Memorial Hospital in Tokyo, where he trained under Dr. Tetsu Yamaguchi and developed expertise in interventional cardiology and echocardiography. In 1992, following his clinical training, Dr. Abe was appointed Instructor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the University of Tokyo, working with Dr. Kiyoshi Kurokawa.
In 1995, Dr. Abe transitioned to a research-focused career and joined the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle as a Senior Fellow in Cardiology in the laboratory of Dr. Bradford C. Berk. He received his Ph.D. in Medicine (Cardiology) from the University of Tokyo in 1998 under the mentorship of Drs. Kiyoshi Kurokawa and Yoh Takuwa. In 1999, Dr. Abe was recruited to the University of Rochester as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Tenured Professor in 2011 and named Dean’s Professor in 2013. In 2014, Dr. Abe joined the faculty of the Department of Cardiology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He was also appointed Adjunct Professor at the Institute of Biosciences and Technology at Texas A&M University in 2017.
Dr. Abe has received research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Heart Association (AHA), and the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA), a former Dean’s Professor at the University of Rochester, and an Established Investigator of the American Heart Association. He was also honored with the ATVB Special Recognition Award in Vascular Biology.
Dr. Abe has authored approximately 190 scientific publications, including original research articles, reviews, and editorials. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), JACC: CardioOncology, Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology, American Journal of Physiology (AJP), Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, and Metabolism. He also serves as Guest Editor forCirculation Research, Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular Translational Research, and Specialty Chief Editor for the Cardio-Oncology section of Frontiers in Cardiovascular Medicine.
