Bio Statement

Dr. Kathleen Schmeler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gynecologic Oncology and Reproductive Medicine.  She provides surgical care and chemotherapy to women with gynecologic malignancies.  She performs specialized procedures in minimally invasive surgery, including robotic surgery, for appropriate patients with cervical, endometrial and ovarian cancer.  Dr. Schmeler is also the Director of the MD Anderson Cancer Center colposcopy clinic where she treats women with pre-invasive cervical, vulvar and vaginal disease.

Dr. Schmeler’s primary research interest is in cervical cancer prevention and treatment, particularly in developing countries and for underserved women in the United States.  She is actively involved with the MD Anderson Global Academic Programs and is perfoming several clinical trials with MD Anderson Sister Institutions in Latin America and around the world. 

Dr. Schmeler has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals.  In addition, she has been invited to write book chapters and review articles on a variety of topics in gynecologic oncology.  Dr. Schmeler is an active speaker, both nationally and internationally.  She is a reviewer for several journals.
