Bio Statement

Dr. Lois M. Ramondetta joined the MD Anderson Gynecologic Oncology Department after completing her fellowship in 2000. She holds a full time Associate Professor Faculty position at MD Anderson Cancer Center and she is currently the Director of Gynecologic Oncology at Lyndon Baines Johnson General Hospital, Harris County Hospital District. She is a key member of the M. D. Anderson Outreach Program, which provides quality cancer care at regional medical centers, and trains fellows, residents, and medical students in the field of gynecologic oncology. Aside from direct patient care and resident training, she has chaired or co chaired the HCHD Cancer Committee since 2004 which is responsible for all cancer related activities in the District and assuring accreditation of the district by the American College of Surgeons.

Caring for patients at both MD Anderson and the indigent patients in the county, she is extremely active in developing and running clinical trials in both locations. She is the Principal Investigator or co-PI for several treatment and psycho-social trials at M. D. Anderson and Lyndon Baines Johnson Hospital, and has been integral in bringing these trials to the community through the outreach program. She focuses her clinical research on biomedical ethics, and the effect of spirituality during cancer treatment, and quality of life and on treatment trials for cervical and endometrial cancer and participates actively in treatment trials for ovarian cancer. One of her passions is to evaluate and eliminate barriers to care for the indigent patients afflicted with gynecologic cancer. She has published over 40 peer reviewed articles and authored many book chapters on cancer treatment and palliative care.

She is has served on the Memorial Hermann and University of Texas M.D. Anderson Clinical Bioethics Committee. She has completed a three year term on the American College of Obstetrician and Gynecologist’s (ACOG) Ethics Committee and presently serves as a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncologist’s (ASCO) Ethics Committee.

She has a BA in Religion and a BS in Biology from Emory University, has completed a Lay Chaplaincy program, and has a strong interest in improving physician-patient communication. She most recently co wrote a book with a patient and friend entitled "THE LIGHT WITHIN" published by William Morrow a division of HarperCollins that further explores the sanctity of the doctor patient relationship.
