Bio Statement

Mark W. Clemens, M.D. is an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.  He completed his surgical training at Georgetown University, and studied at Cornell University, and Pennsylvania State University.  He completed research training programs at the National Institutes of Health and Harvard Children's Hospital.  He also received advanced training in Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery through fellowship at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Clemens serves as a manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

Dr. Clemens has lectured nationally and internationally on a broad range of topics related to plastic and reconstructive surgery and has authored over 25 peer-reviewed articles and 21 book chapters.

Research Interests

Dr. Clemens' research interests include outcomes and translational research involving microvascular and prosthetic reconstructive surgery of the breast, with an emphasis on the effects of radiation and locally advanced breast cancer.  Dr. Clemens has also focused on free flap physiology, wound healing, and the development of surgical protocols for reconstructive surgery of the head and neck, abdominal wall, and the lower extremity.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Clemens performs reconstructive surgery for patients with cancer involving all areas of the body.  His clinical interests include reconstructive surgery for patients with breast cancer, head and neck cancer, and cancer of the upper and lower extremities.  Dr. Clemens specializes in complex reconstructions of the breast, abdominal wall, face, oral cavity, jaws and the facial nerve.  Dr. Clemens has performed hundreds of microvascular free flap surgeries for cancer patients.  He also performs reconstructions after removal of skin cancers, such as after Moh's surgery or surgery for melanoma.
