About Dr. Paul F. Mansfield

Dr. Paul F. Mansfield serves professor of Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Mansfield earned his B.S degree in Chemical Engineering from Drexel University in 1979, and in 1983 he received his M.D. from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia (now Sidney Kimmel). After completing research and clinical Fellowships in Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson, Dr. Mansfield became assistant professor with the Department of Surgical Oncology in 1991. He was subsequently appointed associate professor in 1997. He went on to become professor of Surgical Oncology in 2003, deputy chair of this department in 2007, and head of Emergency Services in 2009. In May 2011, Dr. Mansfield was named Vice President for Acute Care Services where over the next 7 years he brought together and created several foundational improvements to patient care across the hospital. In 2012, he was named co-chair of the Electronic Medical Record Steering Committee and served as physician lead for MD Anderson’s transition to the EPIC EHR with go live in 2016. Dr. Mansfield has served and, in many cases, led institutional committees such as the COIC and Faculty Senate. Dr. Mansfield has won numerous awards including the National Cancer Institute’s Research Fellowship Trainee in 1988, the American Cancer Society’s Clinical Oncology Fellowship Award in 1990, Outstanding Teacher Award in 1994, Faculty Achievement Award for Patient Care in 2002, the Ehrenzeller Award in 2009, and is consistently recognized as a top 1% provider by Press-Ganey. Since 2015 he served on the executive committee of the International Gastric Cancer Association and served as president following the 2022 Congress. In 2025, with other co-investigators, successfully competed for an NIH U-01 grant to study hereditary gastric cancer.

Dr. Mansfield's research interests include: Clinical management of peritoneal surface malignancies and gastric cancer

Multi-omic spatial profiling of the development of hereditary diffuse gastric cancer in CDH1 variant patients.

Dr. Mansfield's clinical interests include: Hereditary Gastric cancer and Peritoneal surface malignancies including tumors of the appendix
