Randy D. Ernst, M.D.

Present Title & Affiliation

Primary Appointment

Professor, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Division of Diagnostic Imaging, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX
Rotating Resident Radiology Program Director, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Division of Diagnostic Imaging, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX

Bio Statement

In 2007, Dr. Randy Ernst joined MD Anderson Cancer Center as a member of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology. As an abdominal radiologist, he evaluates CT, Ultrasound and MRI studies of the chest, abdomen and pelvis.

Five years ago, staging of rectal cancer was limited to CT and endoscopic ultrasound. With Dr. Ernst's participation, current MRI procedures were developed to more clearly demonstrate organ involvement so that staging is more accurate. Dr. Ernst continually evaluates the newest technology to assess its role in treating rectal cancer and describing tumor characteristics.

Dr. Ernst participates in the multidisciplinary International Rare Cancers Initiative (IRCI) Metastatic Anal Cancer group sponsored by the National Cancer Institute and ASCO. For the last twelve years, he has been an advisor for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. He reviews ultrasound images obtained at the Johnson Space Center and International Space Station, and is on backup call for consultation in the event of a medical emergency on the International Space Station.
