      About Dr. Swathi Arur

      Dr. Swathi Arur is the Blanche Bender Professor of Cancer Research and Deputy Chair of Genetics at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she also serves as Professor in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Program Leader for Genetics and Epigenetics within the Cancer Center Support Grant. Her lab's research has significantly contributed to our understanding of how ERK signaling and RNA regulatory pathways govern fertility, cellular identity, and tumor progression. Through pioneering studies on Dicer phosphorylation, small RNA biology, and chromatin regulation, her laboratory has uncovered fundamental mechanisms by which developmental programs are co-opted in cancer progression and metastasis, bridging developmental biology, reproductive biology, and cancer research with important implications for human disease and therapy.


      An internationally recognized leader in genetics and developmental biology, Dr. Arur was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) in 2020 and, in 2024, was inducted into both the UT Kenneth I. Shine Academy of Health Science Education and the MD Anderson Academy of Research Education and Training. She has served as Secretary and Executive Board member of the Genetics Society of America and was selected as an Emerging Leader in Health and Medicine by the National Academy of Medicine. A passionate mentor and educator, Dr. Arur is widely recognized for advancing excellence in science, leadership, and graduate education while training the next generation of scientists and physician-scientists.

      Research in Dr. Arur's lab is focused in several areas including (i) Intergenerational effects of environmental stress on germline function and female and male reproductive development. (ii) Mechanisms of nuclear and post-translationally modified DICER in chromatin and transcriptional control. (iii) RNA-based regulation of cell identity and plasticity and (iv) Epigenetic and signaling mechanisms driving lineage switching in cancer
