Bio Statement

Wei Tse Yang, MBBS, FRCR, is Professor and Chair, Department of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.  She is the co-chair of the Divisional Council of Gender Inclusiveness Committee at MD Anderson. As director of the Quantitative Image Analysis Core (QIAC) and the Imaging Response Assessment Team (IRAT), she co-lead the execution of standardized imaging Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors (RECIST) based tumor response measurements to support clinical trial development and drug discovery. The QIAC platform provides a huge repository for imaging data related to novel clinical trials. It currently supports 70 active clinical trials, and has performed and stored over 400 patient RECIST measurements. Significant institutional QIAC partnerships include support of the Lung Moonshot projects on Genomic Marker-guided therapy initiative (GEMINI) and the low dose lung CT screening trial. As part of the Center for Advanced Biomedical Imaging (CABI) executive steering committee, Dr. Yang participated in the creation and award process of the multi-investigator imaging (MI2) grants. A total of 4 successful grants in excess of $5M were awarded to Diagnostic Radiology faculty. Additionally, two investigator initiated grants were recently (November 2015) awarded by the Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to Diagnostic Radiology faculty for a sum of $1.8M.

Dr. Yang has led and championed the technique of “targeted axillary dissection (TAD)” in collaboration with the breast surgeons and breast pathologists at MD Anderson. This novel approach ensures a false negative rate of less than 5% for SLND post NAC. Collaboration with the Rebecca Richards-Kortum laboratory (Rice University) has led to seminal work in the evaluation of breast tissue samples using confocal microscopy to determine tumor cellularity for bio-banking support from the Department of Defense Era of Hope Award W81XWH-09-1-0410, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure grant KG091020, ACRIN, and NIH/NCI.

Collaboration with the Tromberg laboratory (UC Irvine) has led to successful completion of the American College of Radiology Imaging Network 6691 trial that evaluated the role of diffuse optical spectroscopic imaging in monitoring response to therapy and showed feasibility of this hand-held technique in a multi-institutional setting with Dr. Yang serving as a Subcontract PI under R01 CA142989.

Dr. Yang has received consistent external grant funding as a collaborator or co-principle investigator over the last 5 years, with funding from DOD, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and NIH/NCI. . She is a member of the Cancer Center Strategic Grant (CCSG) breast group, Women’s Moonshot (Flagship 2, triple-negative breast cancer) program, breast cancer steering committee, and have authored more than 170 peer-reviewed articles, and co-authored a breast imaging textbook (Elsevier’s Publishers).

Research Interests

Multimodality breast imaging (mammography, ultrasound, MRI) biomarker correlates for molecular subtypes of breast cancer.

Response evaluation using innovative breast imaging technology (molecular breast imaging, optico-acoustic sonography (hand-held and tomographic), functional MR.  

Imaging assisted advances in minimally invasive surgery for breast cancer (targeted axillary dissection, surgical therapeutic algorithms for breast cancer subtypes).

Clinical Interests

Multimodality breast imaging, high resolution ultrasounds, automated breast ultrasound, and breast intervention of the breast regional nodes.
