About Isabel Martinez Leal
Dr. Isabel Martinez Leal is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Science at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Her training in cultural anthropology and public health inform her perspective and interests in cancer prevention in which understanding the complex cultural and contextual issues underlying the social determinants of health is essential to the delivery of equitable, culturally congruent and quality care. Her research focuses on enhancing cancer prevention and support and eliminating health disparities among vulnerable groups, specifically, disparities related to tobacco use and dependence among various sub-groups experiencing disadvantage, through addressing the health inequities driving these disparities. Her work has also included increasing lung cancer screening and promoting shared decision-making and equitable, patient-centered care. She is a qualitative research specialist and mixed methods researcher engaged in a team science approach to applying these methods to varied cancer research projects that yield translational, practical findings to guide intervention and implementation strategies.
