Research Interests
Ion channels are integral membrane proteins that control cellular ionic homeostasis and electric signaling. By gating (opening and closing) their pores that are selectively permeable to different ions across membrane, ion channels are involved in nearly all fundamental cellular and physiological processes. As one of the few most tractable protein classes, ion channels have long been key targets in pharmaceutical drug development for excitable cells-related treatments and diseases including anesthesia and neurological, cardiovascular and muscular disorders. Ion channels are currently targets of ~ 20% approved drugs for human diseases and are recently emerging as biomarkers and therapeutic targets for many nonexcitable cells-related diseases including cancer. The overall long-term goal of my research is to identify novel protein targets, molecular mechanisms, and drugs or molecular agents that are suitable for ion channel-targeted therapeutic intervention in cancer and neurological conditions and diseases including anesthesia, pain, and chemotherapy-induced fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and neuropathy. To achieve this goal, my research focuses on: 1) identification and structural/functional characterization of novel regulatory auxiliary proteins of ion channels; 2) determination of the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms of ion channel gating processes and regulation by novel auxiliary proteins or modulators; and 3) development of novel drugs or molecular agents for ion channel-targeted therapy.
