Jyotika Sharma, M.Phil., Ph.D.
Department of Critical Care Medicine, Division of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Pain Medicine
Present Title & Affiliation
Primary Appointment
Associate Professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine - Research, Division of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Pain Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, TX
Dual/Joint/Adjunct Appointment
Associate Professor (Tenured),, Department of Critical Care, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
Research Interests
The current research focus of my laboratory is to understand myeloid cell functions in lung microenvironment during acute and chronic inflammatory diseases. Specifically, my research group is engaged in understanding the neutrophil generation, turnover and effector functions in regulation of inflammation in pneumonia, sepsis, Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). More recently, in collaboration with industry partners and clinicians at MDACC, we have expanded our research to understand the mechanisms and implications of neutrophil extracellular trap formation in breast cancer patients and septic oncologic patients. My laboratory provides a research-intensive environment for training graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and junior investigators. I have served as the Director of NIH-funded P20 Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) on host-pathogen interactions. In Phase I funding period, this COBRE was focused on infrastructure development, mentoring and career development of early career (tenure-track) Assistant Professors working on various aspects of host responses to viral, bacterial and parasitic infections. Before moving to MDACC in Oct-2020, I worked with the Phase I team to submit the Phase II renewal proposal, which was funded in July, 2021. Currently, I serve on the External Advisory Board of this COBRE with an active role in advising the PIs and serving as liaison with the NIH to evaluate the progress of research projects and core facilities affiliated with the COBRE, review replacement projects, make recommendations and provide critical input for improvement of the program
