About Dr. Aung

I am a Professor of Pathology and a practicing Dermatopathologist with over 10 years of experience. My expertise as diagnostician for cutaneous tumors is nationally recognized; therefore, my opinion is often requested in challenging cases. I am also Director of Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program in our department which is the largest ACGME-accredited Fellowship Program in our institution since 2019. Prior to assuming the directorship position, I served as co-director of the fellowship. In addition, I am currently Site Director of Pathology fellowship Programs, and oversees the educational activities of rotating residents, fellows and observers (more than 40 trainees/year) in our department.

My research interest includes rare cutaneous neoplasms including acral melanoma, merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) and extramammary Paget disease, molecular advancement of diagnostic pathology and digital pathology. Our department is heavily focused on diagnostic responsibilities, and independent grant funding for early career faculty is unusual. However, with 13% of my effort dedicated to research, I have excelled in securing twelve intra- and extramural grant funding as Principal Investigator which include the Melanoma Research Alliance (MRA) covering 10% FTE. My work in cancer biology and cutaneous lesions has resulted in over 200 refereed journal publications (78 of these as first/corresponding author), 12 book chapters and over 200 poster/platform presentations at national and international conferences with a Google Scholar h index of 38. My work has been published in high-impact journals, including JAMA Oncology, Nature Communications, Modern Pathology, and Clinical Cancer Research. I am also a grant reviewer of 4 national and international societies including NIH. I serve on the editorial board and guest editor of the Journals, lead editor for Virtual Biopsy Program (VBP) from CAP, editor for Performance Improvement Program in Surgical Pathology (PIP) as well as Digital Slide Program-Dermatopathology (DPATH) from CAP and ad hoc reviewer for more than 30 journals. For all of my research accomplishment despite an 75% clinical load on the very busy Dermatopathology service, I was recognized with the Shirley Stein Scientific Endowed Research Award (which recognizes exceptional clinical research by faculty members with limited project resources) in 2020 and Early Career Faculty Research Award, Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, at UT- MD Anderson Cancer Center, 2021, and American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Philip Levine Award for Outstanding Research, 2022.

With 12% of my effort dedicated to education, mentoring and administration, I have been serving as a member of Committee/Executive Committee of multiple national and international Pathology and Dermatopathology Societies including International Society of Dermatopathology (ISDP), College of American Pathology (CAP), American Society of Dermatopathology (ASDP), United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), Asian Society of Dermatopathology (ASD-cofounder). In addition, I have managed to carve out a national and international presence in the area of cutaneous malignancies, specifically melanoma and other rare cutaneous neoplasms by being invited to present and chair over 70 courses and seminars at national and international meetings and academic institutions in more than 30 different countries. I considered myself a very passionate teacher and has mentored >100 national and international residents, fellows and practicing physicians. I have authored 75 peer-reviewed publications and 113 abstracts with a fellow or resident as 1st author and received 8 fellow-mentor grants with my mentees. I have also mentored fellows/residents who are recipients of the Physician-in-Training Award for Best Presentation at the ASDP meetings in 2018 and 2020, the Best Oral Presentation at the 94th Annual Meeting of the Texas Society of Pathologists (TSP) in 2015 and the special Dr. Juan Rosai Award from the Latin American Pathology Foundation at the annual United States & Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) in 2021. In recognition of my commitment to education and mentorship, I received the Faculty Educator Award (2021); Outstanding Faculty Mentor Award from the Interdisciplinary Translational Education and Research Training Program (2021); Faculty Excellence Award for Mentorship in Surgical Pathology (2022); Multi Year Appointment Award for Clinical Faculty (2022); UT System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award (2022); Arthur Purdy Stout Society Annual Prize (2022); Clinical Education Emil J. Freireich Award for Excellence in Education, GME (2023); Faculty Scholar award (2023); Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award (Clinical); Academic Mentoring Council (2023); and 2023 Academy Inductee, MD Anderson Academy of Health Science Education, MD Anderson's "Hall of Fame" for educators.

I also serve to our institution in the leadership roles; as Chair of Mid-Career Faculty Committee (MCFC) representing ~650 associate professors at MDACC, member of Academic Leadership Team (ALT) senator of faculty senate, voting member of graduate medical education committee and member of functional mentoring program.

I have excelled as a leader in all three classical spheres of academia: patient care, research, and education, as evidenced in my curriculum vitae. For all my above-mentioned accomplishments, I received early promotion to Associate Professor rank in 2019 and to Professor rank in 2014, President's Recognition of Faculty Excellence Award in 2020 and Arthur Purdy Stout Society Annual Prize from the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) in 2022. More recently I received 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award from CAP recognizing not only my precise diagnoses having positively impacted patients but also my mentorship has shaped the careers of countless pathology trainees who now hold positions in esteemed institutions nationwide.
