About Dr. Arunkumar
The goal of the proposed research is to investigate the performance in reading and mathematics of retinoblastoma patients and their siblings who have been exposed to multiple anesthetics. Specifically, this study will have a retrospective and prospective design where we plan to measure the performance of study subjects in the state administered (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills) test. Test scores of study subjects will be compared to that of their classroom peers at their respective grade levels. My institution (MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas) is a major referral center for patients with a diagnosis of retinoblastoma and we currently have over eighty patients in our database who have been treated by a single surgeon, Dr Dan Gombos MD. I currently administer several anesthetics for pediatric patients with retinoblastoma at least one day a week.
I have attended the first FDA sponsored SafeKids symposium addressing the topic of anesthetics and their potential neurotoxic effects in developing brains, at their White Oak campus in Silver Spring, MD in November 2009, and several other symposia including the SafeKids symposium in Honolulu, HI in March 2010 at the IARS Annual Meeting and the Clinical Forum and Panel discussions on this topic at the ASA and SNACC Annual meetings in October 2010 in San Diego, CA.
I am aware of the complex nature of designing clinical studies to address this topic. I am co-principal investigator and collaborator on several clinical research projects at MD Anderson. I have done basic science research as an Anesthesia Resident in the University of Iowa and presented the data at international and national conferences. I have also done clinical research throughout my career, including designing, conducting, analyzing data, and writing a manuscript for my Clinical Thesis project as part of my Board certification in India, and I have also been involved in several clinical research projects in the UK during the course of my Fellowship. I have written several abstracts which have involved data review and presented them at national and international meetings. As a result of this, I have the experience of collaborating with all parties involved in a research project. The current application builds logically into my current practice and I will be working with Drs. Owusu-Agyemang and Rebello who provide additional expertise in pediatric anesthesia and clinical research. In summary, this area of research falls in line with my current clinical practice and we have the patient population and resources necessary to successfully complete this project.
