About Dr. Rebecca A. Snyder
I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology with a joint faculty appointment in the Department of Health Services Research at MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). I am board certified in Complex General Surgical Oncology, and the primary focus of my clinical practice is the surgical management of pancreatic cancer. During my surgical residency training, I obtained a Master of Public Health degree and have since developed robust research expertise in health services research, specifically cancer care delivery research (CCDR). In the past 5 years as a junior investigator, my research efforts have focused on addressing disparities in cancer care delivery. As PI on several extramurally funded grants, I am conducting prospective efforts to explore specific barriers to receipt of quality cancer care for rural and minority patients, including transportation, social determinants of health, and telehealth access. I have also led a multidisciplinary team in an R21 submission to test feasibility and acceptability of an integrated physical activity and music therapy intervention to improve cancer caregiver wellbeing and quality of life (under review). In these roles, I have developed skills in effective research administration and budgeting, oversight, and interprofessional collaboration.I currently serve as Associate Program Director for Resident Research at ECU and Co-Director of the ECU Department of Surgery Health Services Research Program. In this role, I have mentored medical students and surgical residents in research, resulting in multiple student and trainee national presentations and publications. In 2020, I was awarded the Bernard Vick Faculty Teaching Award by the graduating ECU chief residents for excellence in clinical teaching in surgery. I currently serve as Chair of the Clinical and Health Services Research Committee for the Association of Academic Surgeons (AAS) and am responsible for organizing and leading the AAS Fundamentals of Research Course. In joining the MDACC faculty, I will be very engaged in the clinical education and research mentorship of the surgical oncology fellows and residents, especially in cancer care delivery and disparities research.
