Carin A. Hagberg, M.D., FASA, FACHE
Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Division of Anesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, and Pain Medicine
About Dr. Carin A. Hagberg
Until I joined The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in October, 2016, I had been a faculty member in the Department of Anesthesiology at The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth) Medical School for 24 years. During my career at UTHealth, I served as Program Director of Undergraduate Education, Program Director of Residency Education, Vice Chair, and finally Chairman of the Department, a position in which I served for 9 years.
I received my B.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, graduating cum laude. I received my M.D. degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1988 and performed my residency training at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, where I served as Chief Resident.
I have been involved in many professional organizations at local, regional, national, and international levels. I have been an active member of the Society of Airway Management since its inception and am currently in my 8th year as Executive Director. Additionally, I have served as President of the Texas Gulf Coast Society of Anesthesiologists. The focus of my career has been neuroanesthesia and difficult airway management, including both educational and clinical research aspects in these areas. I have been involved in the development of the ASA Practice Guidelines on Management of the Difficult Airway in one form or another since their development in 1992 and publication in 1993 and serve as editor of the fourth edition of the textbook, now titled Hagberg and Benumof’s Airway Management, and will be published in 2017.

Research Interests
Throughout my career, I have conducted clinical research and have received both internal and external funding, raising over $3M for the University of Texas Medical School at Houston. I have provided opportunities for research involvement and mentored high school, college, and medical students, as well as residents and junior faculty in the conduction of clinical research. I plan to continue my clinical research at MD Anderson and will involve many faculty in the process. Additionally, I have been involved in the development of numerous advanced airway devices, serving as a medical advisor to several companies. I sit on the editorial board or serve as an editor of numerous journals and am well published in the area of airway management. Most of my clinical research has been company sponsored, primarily with companies that are involved with airway device production. I will continue to perform clinical research at MD Anderson with a special focus in airway management and enhanced recovery pathways. Patients with head and neck cancer are especially at high risk for difficult airway management. My expertise in this area can be leveraged into high quality patient care and research protocols at MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Clinical Interests
I have always been clinically active, providing care to some of the most complicated neurosurgical and orthopedic spine patients in the hospital setting. I served at Director of Neuroanesthesia for 12 years while at UTHealth. Although my time in the operating room is more limited now than earlier in my career, I am often selected as the care provider for special request cases, including awake craniotomy procedures and selected patients, as I have developed expertise in this area and am able to easily win the confidence of frightened patients and nervous surgeons. I have additional expertise in difficult airway management and facilitate airway management of very difficult airways with my colleagues in the clinical setting. I often use more advanced airway techniques, such as flexible scope intubation (awake/asleep) and combination techniques. I will continue to perform clinical research and practice my expertise in difficult airway management, as MD Anderson has a plethora of challenging airway cases. MD Anderson has developed a robust Enhanced Surgical Recovery Program in the Department of Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine, in concert with the Division of Surgery to minimize symptom burden, enhance functional recovery, improve outcomes and enable delivery of safe, effective, and value-based cancer care. I will encourage further collaborative efforts between the 2 divisions with hopes to extend this model of care to all surgical oncologic patients at MD Anderson, as well as hospitals within the Cancer Network. The plan is to create a Center of Excellence at MD Anderson in perioperative care of the cancer patient in the near future.
