Cielito C. Reyes-Gibby, Dr. PH
Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine
About Dr. Cielito C. Reyes-Gibby
Dr. Reyes-Gibby is a Professor with Tenure in the Department of Emergency Medicine. She has a dual appointment in the Department of Biostatistics.
Dr. Reyes-Gibby is a population scientist, and the focus of her research is on the application of classical and molecular epidemiology approaches to understanding the complex interaction among clinical, epidemiological and biological/genetic factors on the occurrence and persistence of cancer-related symptoms and toxicities of cancer treatment. Early in her career, she received a Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) that enabled her to pursue advanced training in molecular and statistical genetic methods of analyses. Her research is considered innovative, as it bridges the fields of basic and clinical research to better understand the biological mechanisms underlying cancer-related symptoms. Since 2004, she has been awarded several grants as Principal Investigator by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that aim to identify biological markers of risk for severe and persistent cancer-related symptoms and toxicities of treatment including neuropathic pain and oral mucositis. She also received foundation grants to pursue clinical research on pain and opioid misuse risk. Most recently, she received a grant to develop a disposition index for immune-related adverse events from immune-checkpoint inhibitor therapy.
She served as Founding Chair of the Genetics and Pain Special Interest Group of the American Pain Society and serves as Vice Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee of Comprehensive Oncologic Emergencies Research Network (CONCERN), a multi-institutional network of departments of emergency medicine sponsored by the NCI that aims to improve the understanding of oncologic emergencies. She served as Chair of the Research Committee in the Division of Internal Medicine at MD Anderson. She is on the editorial boards of her specialty journals and a member of the Interdisciplinary Clinical Care in Specialty Care Settings Study Section at the NIH. She also served as a panelist for a NIH initiative for identifying innovative and ground breaking scientific approaches to the study of the genetics of chronic pain conditions. She is the 2016 recipient of the Provost Distinguished Faculty Mentor Award at MD Anderson.
