David J. Vining, M.D.
Department of Abdominal Imaging, Division of Diagnostic Imaging
About Dr. Vining
David Vining is a Professor of Diagnostic Radiology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX, where he serves as the Medical Director of the Image Processing and Visualization Laboratory. Dr. Vining completed his BS in Biomedical Engineering from Tulane University in 1983, MD from LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1987, Radiology Residency at University Hospital in Shreveport in 1992, and Body Imaging/3D Imaging Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in 1993. Dr. Vining began his academic career at the Wake Forest University in 1993 where he invented virtual colonoscopy, a minimally invasive method for colorectal cancer screening that utilizes CT scanning and 3D image analysis. Another of his inventions in the field of multimedia structured reporting led Dr. Vining to start a company, PointDx, in 1999 that was successfully acquired by IDX in 2004. Dr. Vining later joined the faculty at the University of Maryland in Baltimore before being recruited to MD Anderson in 2008. Dr. Vining continues to pursue research and development in the fields of colorectal cancer detection and bioinformatics, and he has recently formed a new company, VisionSR, to commercialize a novel structured reporting system for image-based medical specialties.
