About Dr. Schomer
Dr. Donald Schomer received his Bachelor of Science with honors in Biophysics in 1979. In 1986, he completed a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering-Biomedical Engineering Option in at the University of Houston, while serving full time as an engineer at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Dr. Schomer received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. He completed his Master of Business Administration degree in 2000, at the Jones Graduate School of Administration, Rice University in Houston,
After completing Fellowship training in Neuroradiology at Stanford School of Medicine, Dr. Schomer joined the Faculty of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1994 as an Assistant Professor of Radiology. In 2000, Dr. Schomer was promoted to Associate Professor. In 2002, Dr. Schomer left MD Anderson where he was the Medical Director of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Radiology Outpatient Center.
He then served as a neuroradiologist and partner at Radiology Imaging Associates of Colorado and was a core member of the Colorado Neurological Institute. Dr. Schomer rejoined MD Anderson in 2011 as the Chairman of Radiology at the Banner MD Anderson Cancer Center, a startup partner site in Gilbert Arizona.
In August 2015, Dr. Schomer returned to Houston as Professor of Radiology, Section Chief-Neuroradiology, Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Special Assistant to the Chair. Dr. Schomer is the past ad interim Department Chair for Neuroradiology and Head and Neck Imaging. In 2024, Dr. Schomer was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology (FACR).
Dr. Schomer holds many US and International Patents for novel medical procedures and devices. Many of these patents formed the basis for several entrepreneurial start-up medical device companies, including Vertos Medical, which was recently acquired by Stryker. Additionally, Dr. Schomer has numerous publications and educational lectures in the field of neuroradiology and head and neck imaging.
