About Dr. Heather G. Lyu
Heather Lyu, M.D., M.B.I. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Director of the Department of Surgical Oncology Clinical Research Informatics Program. Her clinical practice focuses on the multidisciplinary care of patients with soft-tissue sarcomas. She received her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed her surgical training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, followed by a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at MD Anderson Cancer Center. She also completed training in Clinical Informatics at Brigham and Women's Hospital and obtained her Master of Biomedical Informatics degree from Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Lyu's research sits at the intersection of surgical oncology and clinical informatics, with a focus on building next-generation data infrastructure to support high-quality cancer research. She led the development of an integrated, prospective data system that unifies structured clinical documentation with advanced analytics platforms, enabling the capture of rich, longitudinal patient data at scale. A central component of her work is harnessing artificial intelligence — including large language models — to extract nuanced clinical variables from clinical documentation that are otherwise inaccessible through traditional data collection methods. These efforts span tumor characteristics, treatment details, and long-term oncologic outcomes such as recurrence. By combining purpose-built data architecture with AI-driven data capture, Dr. Lyu's program aims to accelerate surgical oncology research, improve the precision of outcome prediction, and ultimately advance the care of patients with complex malignancies.

Research Interests
I plan to conduct innovative research in informatics relevant to surgical oncology and the field of sarcoma. First of all, I will develop a research informatics program to standardize data abstraction and collection. I have already started working on this program by creating data standards for a melanoma specific synoptic operative report as well as for new patients seen in the pancreas clinic. This initiative was partially funded with an institutional research award last year (Jesse H. Jones Fellowship in Cancer Education Research Award). I plan to create similar EHR-based data standardization and automated data extraction processes for all disease sites within the department. I will also continue to work with the institutional Context Engine to assist with the ingression of all surgical data and combine them with those collected by other disciplines, including pathology and imaging data. My ultimate goal is to study the implementation of this data infrastructure and study the best practices for this process. Secondly, for data elements and clinical variables that we are unable to structure or extract from the EHR, I plan to implement natural language processing (NLP) algorithms to derive data elements from unstructured documentation and existing clinical data points. NLP is currently underutilized to identify important oncologic endpoints from the EHR. I intend to start by studying the use of NLP for early prediction of recurrence in patients who undergo surgery for soft tissue sarcoma. I hope to obtain extramural funding to support this work, particularly through opportunities promoted by the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Biomedical Informatics and Information Technology. Finally, I will study the role of the real world or EHR-based evidence in developing predictive models to identify sarcoma patients who would benefit from surgical vs nonsurgical interventions on presentation. Specifically, I hope to perform a study on identifying real world data for a prediction model to identify patients with small GISTs who would benefit from early surgical intervention.
Clinical Interests
My clinical focus will be in sarcoma. I will be working with a multidisciplinary team including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists to provide the most up to date, comprehensive care for patients with these rare tumors. In my practice, I will be expected to completely understand the biology and behavior of all types of sarcomas and apply this knowledge to taking care of patients. Additionally, I will also need to gain expertise in a wide range of surgical techniques and approaches, including but not limited to minimally invasive procedures, limb-sparing surgery, and reconstructive procedures. I will develop my clinical skill under the guidance of my senior partners in the sarcoma section, particularly my mentor, Christina Roland.
