About Dr. Hop S Tran Cao

Dr. Tran Cao specializes in the management of hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) tumors, with a focus on liver and biliary tract cancers, and is an expert in the judicious and safe application of minimally invasive techniques, including robotic surgery, in their surgical management. His research focuses on quality of cancer care, and on the precision with which it is delivered. In particular, he has conducted research and published extensively on the role of neoadjvuvant therapy for primary liver tumors, including cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). He serves or has served as PI for many active and completed clinical trials, including a national trial through the National Cancer Institute. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, editorials, and book chapters examining treatment outcomes for HPB cancers, minimally HPB surgery, and the use of fluorescence-guided surgery in oncology. He is the Director of Research in the Section of HPB, where he leads the HPB Fellows Research Consortium.

In addition, at the institutional level, Dr. Tran Cao serves as the Medical Director of the Minimally Invasive & New Technology in Oncologic Surgery (MINTOS) and the Chair of the Perioperative Value Analysis Team in the Division of Surgery. He is also Medical Director of Surgical Simulation Education in the Division of Education and the Surgical Advisor to the Goal-Concordant Care Program.
