      About Dr. Ken-Pin Hwang

An integral part of this project is the development and implementation of imaging sequences and reconstruction algorithms. My experiences in MRI research and development make me fully-qualified as a key collaborator to the project. My training in MR physics, sequence development, and reconstruction algorithms began in graduate school under the tutorship of Professor Jeffrey Duerk at Case Western Reserve University, where I developed methods for interventional device guidance, angiography, and fat/water imaging. From there I was employed by General Electric (GE) as a developer and an on-site MR scientist stationed full-time at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center for 13 years. In this role I developed applications for R2* and temperature mapping, MR elastography, radiation therapy planning, fat/water imaging, and spatial accuracy, as well as novel work in multi-parameter mapping and synthetic MR imaging. Within the company, I was a key figure in promoting the use of MR for planning and guiding therapies, which led to the creation of methods for measuring and improving geometric accuracy in MR, and exposed me to the unique needs of image guided therapy. In my current position at MD Anderson, I continue to advance the imaging technologies I developed. My connections with key engineers at GE will also be a great resource to draw on to overcome potential technical challenges in developing sequences and software for use in this study and ultimately in the clinic. In summary, my expertise in MR physics and research, as well as my successful collaborative relationships, will help ensure the success of this project.
