About Dr. Kyle Mitchell
Kyle G. Mitchell, M.D., M.Sc., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. Dr. Mitchell completed his undergraduate degree in economics at the University of Notre Dame and earned his medical degree at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston. He was subsequently the inaugural trainee in the accelerated (4+3) general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery training program at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC) and McGovern Medical School, during which he completed a two-year dedicated research sabbatical and concurrently obtained a master's degree in clinical research methodology.
Dr. Mitchell's clinical interests are focused on complex thoracic surgical oncology and include the application of minimally invasive and organ-sparing techniques in the care of patients with early, locoregionally advanced, and oligometastatic cancers of the lung, esophagus, and mediastinum. He is trained in all aspects of thoracic surgery, including surgery for diseases of the chest wall, pleura, and airway.
Dr. Mitchell's research efforts center on the examination of immunometabolic hallmarks of tumor immunoevasion in the tumor microenvironment, the identification and validation of clinically applicable biomarkers, and the translation of the results of these investigations towards the development of novel therapeutic strategies. In addition, he is actively engaged in investigation of the rapidly evolving paradigm of local consolidation as a component of multimodality treatment strategies for patients with oligometastic NSCLC and contributed to the development of forthcoming Society of Thoracic Surgeons Clinical Practice Guidelines regarding the role of surgical therapy in this context.
Dr. Mitchell has published more than 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts to date, given numerous presentations nationally and internationally, and has received a number of awards in recognition of his clinical and academic achievements.
