About Dr. Linghua Wang
Dr. Linghua Wang is Professor and Deputy Chair in the Department of Genomic Medicine at UT MD Anderson and Founding Executive Director of the Center for Cellular Language Intelligence. She is also an Associate Member of the James P. Allison Institute and serves as Director of Multi-omics Data Analytics and Co-Lead of Focus Area 2 (Single-Cell Analytics & Spatial Multi-Omics) in the Institute for Data Science in Oncology. She also directs the Computational Biology Laboratory, which she established in 2017 to develop and apply cutting-edge computational and AI-driven approaches to decode cancer ecosystems across space and time and translate these insights into clinically actionable biomarkers, predictive models, and therapeutic strategies.
Dr. Wang is an internationally recognized leader in computational oncology and single-cell and spatial biology, with extensive expertise in cancer genomics, tumor immunology, tumor microenvironment, digital pathology, and AI-enabled biomedical discovery. The Wang Laboratory studies the transition from premalignant lesions to invasive cancer, the evolution from primary tumors to metastasis, and the dynamic response and resistance of tumors to therapy. Across these areas, the group seeks to decode the spatial logic and cellular language of tumor ecosystems—how diverse cell states, functional programs, and tumor–immune–stroma interactions are organized across space and time into functional niches, cellular communities, and spatial archetypes that shape disease progression and clinical outcomes. The lab specializes in deep profiling of complex tissue ecosystems, including cellular and molecular heterogeneity, phenotypic plasticity, and the spatial and temporal dynamics of cancer progression and treatment response. Her group leverages cutting-edge single-cell and spatial multi-omic technologies, ultrahigh-plex molecular profiling, 3D modeling, digital pathology, and advanced computational frameworks and AI/ML methods to uncover fundamental principles of tumor biology and translate high-dimensional data into clinically actionable insights to improve patient care.
Dr. Wang has extensive experience leading large, collaborative, multidisciplinary translational research programs, and in building and directing cross-disciplinary teams at the interface of cancer biology, clinical translation, and AI-driven data science. She currently serves as Lead PI of the Center for Gastric Pre-Cancer Atlas of Multidimensional Evolution in 3D (GAME3D), an NCI Human Tumor Atlas Network (HTAN) U01 center. She also co-leads the Break Through Cancer Data Science TeamLab, serves as Lead of the Data Analysis & Visualization Unit for an NCI U24 in the Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma Stromal Reprogramming Consortium (PSRC), and previously served as Co-Director of the Biostatistics & Bioinformatics Core for the MD Anderson GI SPORE Program and Program Co-Lead of the High-Risk Multiple Myeloma Moon Shot Program. As Co-Lead of Focus Area 2 in the Institute for Data Science in Oncology, she is helping build a world-class data science hub to accelerate basic and translational discovery at MD Anderson.
Work from Dr. Wang’s laboratory has advanced the understanding of tumor cell heterogeneity, phenotypic plasticity, tumor immune microenvironment, and mechanisms of therapy response and resistance across cancers. She has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and 15 invited articles, including reviews, editorials, commentaries, and perspectives, with over 70,000 citations, including numerous first-, senior-, and corresponding-author papers in top-tier and high-impact journals such as Nature (5), Nature Medicine (4), Cancer Cell (5), Cancer Discovery (4), Nature Biotechnology, Nature Genetics (2), The Lancet Oncology, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Gastroenterology, Gut (2), Science Translational Medicine, and Nature Communications (10), as well as invited review articles in premier journals including Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology, Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology, Cancer Cell, Annual Review of Medicine, and Trends in Cancer. Her group has made breakthrough discoveries, several of which have already advanced clinical translation through contributions to the development of new clinical trials. She also serves on the Advisory Board of Cancer Cell and as a Scientific Editor for Cancer Discovery.
Dr. Wang is deeply committed to team science, mentorship, and training the next generation of computational biologists and data scientists. She is building a collaborative learning hub to support this mission. Her mentorship has already helped launch the independent careers of multiple trainees, with six former lab members now leading their own laboratories. Through scientific leadership, collaborative innovation, and rigorous mentorship, Dr. Wang is working to transform how we understand, detect, and treat cancer.
