About Dr. Howell
I am a medical physicist with 20 years of clinical experience, a tenured Professor, certified by the American Board of Radiology in Therapeutic Radiologic Physics, and a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine. I direct the Radiation Dosimetry Services (RDS) and the Late Effects Group. Our team includes 16 staff and three graduate students. I am the Deputy Director of the Medical Physics Graduate Program at the MD Anderson Cancer Center UTHealth Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.
The Radiation Dosimetry Services (RDS) provides independent peer review of beam output calibrations for external beam radiotherapy machines through a mail audit system. Patient safety is directly linked to accurate beam output. Annually, we monitor ~12,000 beams at >1,200 radiotherapy centers worldwide. We also monitor doses for blood irradiators (blood banks) and offer end-to-end peer review for small animal irradiators (research labs). https://rds.mdanderson.org
The Late Effects Group focuses on radiation therapy (RT)-related late effects. Our studies quantify relationships between doses from RT and late effects in cancer survivors. Dose-response relationships can be used to establish normal tissue objectives for RT treatment planning for individual patients in clinics around the world and to improve clinical practice and survivorship guidelines. My lab developed novel methods to reconstruct organ and body region doses for survivors in studies of multi-institutional national and international cohorts including the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS), St. Jude Lifetime, Adult Life after Childhood Cancer in Scandinavia, and Dutch Childhood Oncology Group. We have reconstructed doses for >20,000 survivors.
