Department of Anatomical Pathology, Division of Pathology-Lab Medicine Div
About Dr. Scott D. Jewell
Dr. Jewell joined MD Anderson in 2024 as Deputy Division Head and Professor of Pathology, in the Division of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and the Department of Anatomic Pathology. Dr. Jewell has assumed responsibilities for Tissue Utilization and Biorepositories. Dr. Jewell came from the Van Andel Institute (VAI) and previously from The Ohio State University, where he was Director of Core Technologies and the Human Tissue Research Network (HTRN), respectively.
Dr. Jewell received his B.S. in microbiology, and M.S. and PhD in Experimental Pathology and Immunology from The Ohio State University. He has worked in the field of clinical and anatomic pathology, biospecimen science and biobanking for more than 40 years. Key projects in biobanking include the Midwest Division of the NCI Cooperative Human Tissue Network, the NCI National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) Alliance for Clinical Trials and Oncology (formerly the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB) Pathology Coordinating Office, and OSU’s Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Tissue Procurement Shared Resource (TPSR) and Biorepository and Biospecimen Resource (BBR). Dr. Jewell served as principal investigator for several NIH initiatives; including the Biospecimen Core Resource (BCR) for the NCI Moonshot Biobank, NCI Clinical Proteomics Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC), the Comprehensive Biospecimen Resource (CBR) for the NHGRI/NCI Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEx) project, and the NCI’s Biorepository and Biospecimen Research Branch (BBRB) Biospecimen Preanalytical Variable (BPV) study and as a biobank for several research foundations. As a biorepository resource, these projects focused on biospecimen collection, preservation, processing, histology services, histopathology evaluation, analyte derivation, quality assessment, biobanking and distribution of biospecimens for research.
Dr. Jewell has served on several national and international committees, journal editorial boards, scientific external advisory boards, and as a reviewer of grants and contracts for NIH. He was elected President of the International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) in 2011 and the Great Lakes Biorepository Research Network (GLBRN). Dr. Jewell was also Chair and member of the NCI Clinical Cooperative Group Banking Committee, and the Biospecimen Subcommittee for NCI, AACR, and FDA’s Critical Path Initiative. Dr. Jewell served as an appointed member of the original College of American Pathologists (CAP) Biorepository Accreditation Program (BAP) committee from 2012-2018. The Pathology and Biorepository Core (PBC) at VAI was one of the first accredited biorepositories receiving accreditation in 2012. Dr. Jewell has also served as the IRB Chair at VAI and on the Board for the Michigan Neonatal Biobank; a component of the State of Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Neonatal Biotrust.
Dr. Jewell’s research has focused primarily on biospecimen science to improve the standards and practices for the collection, processing, storage, and distribution of biospecimens. As a graduate school mentor, he supervised doctoral research in hypermutation and neoantigens in primary and recurrent medulloblastoma.
