Department of General Internal Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine
About Dr. Sunil K. Sahai
Dr. Sunil K. Sahai currently serves as Professor of Medicine within the Section of Consultative Medicine in the Department of General Internal Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. His journey began with his undergraduate studies at Tulane University (1993), followed by medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (1997), an institution he would later return to as a leader in 2020. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine & Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 2001, Dr. Sahai embarked on a career that would span both clinical excellence and healthcare innovation.
His professional credentials reflect a commitment to comprehensive patient care and quality improvement. Board certified in Internal Medicine and previously in Pediatrics (2002-2024), he has also achieved board certification in Medical Quality (2014-2019). His dedication to the field has been recognized through his fellowship in the American College of Physicians (FACP) and his status as a Senior Fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SFHM). Most recently, in 2025, he was honored as a Distinguished Fellow in Perioperative Medicine (DFPM) by the Society of Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement.
Dr. Sahai's tenure at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center marked a period of significant innovation in “oncomedicine” and perioperative care. He and his colleagues were the original “oncohospitalists” at a comprehensive cancer center, staffing the emergency department as well as the inpatient wards. As a member of the Department of General Internal Medicine, he developed what became the first formal perioperative medicine program at a comprehensive cancer center in the United States. From 2004 to 2018, he served as Medical Director of the Internal Medicine Perioperative Assessment Center (IMPAC), a role that allowed him to pioneer innovative approaches to preoperative evaluation and management of the cancer patient. His vision culminated in 2018 when IMPAC merged with the Anesthesia Assessment Center to form the Perioperative Evaluation & Management (POEM) Center, where he continued as part of the leadership team. As a leader, he helped establish the Mary Ann Weiser Suspicion of Cancer Clinic, which serves as a gateway for patients seeking clarity of a possible cancer diagnosis.
Beyond perioperative medicine, Dr. Sahai's administrative responsibilities at MD Anderson included serving as Medical Director of the Clinical Decision Unit for observation status patients and Medical Director of the Internal Medicine Center – Main. He served the institution on numerous committees in both member and leadership roles. From 2015 to 2020, he was the Section Chief of Consultative Medicine within the Department of General Internal Medicine. These roles provided him with extensive experience in clinical operations and healthcare management.
In February 2020, Dr. Sahai returned to his alma mater, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, as Professor and Division Chief of General Medicine. In this role, he directed a division of academic clinicians who practiced both hospital and ambulatory settings. His leadership proved particularly valuable during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he played an instrumental role in the institutional response. His contributions to UTMB have been recognized through his election to the UTMB Academy of Master Clinicians in 2022. In the years he served as Division Chief, he nearly doubled the size of the Division and established new service lines and research programs in surgical co-management, community health, substance use disorders, maritime medicine, and obesity medicine. In November 2025, Dr. Sahai transitioned to the role of Director of Perioperative Medicine for the
Department of Medicine at UTMB to focus his efforts on developing an institution wide perioperative medicine program using artificial intelligence.
As of May 2026, Dr. Sahai returned to MD Anderson to be a full-time clinician. He currently sees patients in the Suspicion of Cancer Clinic, POEM, and inpatient wards.
Dr. Sahai has had a deep commitment to his own leadership development. He completed a graduate certificate in Health Care Management from Rice University School of Business and participated in the Leadership Development for Physicians in Academic Health Centers course at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2019. In 2024, he furthered his leadership education by completing the Executive Leadership in Health Care Certificate of Specialization from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Additionally, he has earned the American College of Physicians Certificate in Physician Leadership and has participated in various leadership training programs from both the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM). More recently, he has been on the planning committee and served as faculty for the Academic Alliance in Internal Medicine (AAIM) Business of Medicine course.
His professional engagement extends to numerous medical societies and leadership positions. He serves on the Board of Advisors for the Society of Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI) and is active in the Society of Hospital Medicine, Society of General Internal Medicine, and the Association of Chiefs and Leaders in General Internal Medicine. He also served on the national board of the South Asian Medical Student Association (SAMSA), demonstrating his commitment to supporting the next generation of physicians. Throughout his career, he has mentored numerous physicians across the United States as they navigate their own leadership journeys, sharing his expertise in clinical operations and healthcare management.
Dr. Sahai is internationally recognized as an expert in the perioperative care of cancer patients, a reputation built through years of clinical practice, program development, and scholarly work. He is also known as an advocate for patient partnership in healthcare, believing that patients should be active participants in their care decisions.
