Research Interests
Dr. Lee's research interests are two-fold: homelessness and curriculum development. With regards to homeless research, Dr. Lee developed a grounded theory of the decision-making process used by homeless Vietnam veterans when deciding to access healthcare. She found that the importance of health outcomes change depending on the environment, where access to healthcare is not bounded by quality, but rather by convenience and comes from recommendations gathered through an information communication system, such as "the grapevine". Current research involves the importance of companion animals and the impact these animals have on accessing shelter or housing.
Dr. Lee is also evaluating the impact of concept-based curriculum (CBC) in professional nursing education programs in Texas. CBC offers a paradigm shift in education away from the traditional systems-based approach to teaching. Most recently, in response to the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation's call for a Culture of Health, a longitudinal, scholarship of teaching and learning study was undertaken to determine if social determinants of health (SDOH) were included in the curriculum of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. Seven SDOH factor were used to quantify the data, and three were found to be included in the results.
