Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Division of Anesthesiology, Critical Care and Pain Medicine

      About Dr. Thomas F. Rahlfs

I am an anesthesiologist, board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, with a clinical interest in neuroanesthesia and anesthesia for hepato-biliary surgery. Besides being one of the most requested clinicians in our department, my most significant contributions were in operations and leadership. I was named the first Anesthesia Clinical Director at MD Anderson in 1993. Over the next 7 years I provided physician leadership of our operating rooms, and oversaw the day-to-day running of the operating rooms, surgery scheduling as well as the entire clinical anesthesia service. I had the privilege to be Chair for the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine from 2010 to 2021, and serving as Division Head ad-interim in 2015-1016. In addition, I was part of the executive leadership team that provided oversight and guidance to the institution's Perioperative Services. I spent most of my time managing one of the largest clinical departments (then 75 physicians and over 100 Advanced Practice Providers) in the institution. My service to the institution included serving on committees, and being the chair and co-chair to many. Academically, I participated in the training of our rotating residents and students. My clinical research interests involved clinical investigations related to (1) neuroanesthesia and (2) the effects of anesthetic techniques on the body's immune function and inlfammatory response and how that relates to patients' long term survival. I was invited to provide many lectures at national and international venues on topics related to my research interests as well as what I had been doing within my leadership activities. My extramural service included involvement with my state and national societies, and serving nineteen years as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. I took retirement in 2023 and carried on clinical work at a 0.20FTE level with a Modified Service Appointment until 2026.
